Struggling With Solids?

At this stage, feeding skill development and nutrition go hand in hand, which is why a team approach is essential for babies struggling with solids. This Feeding Team consultation includes a nutrition, oral-motor, and feeding assessment with both Registered Dietitian and Occupational Therapist or Speech-Language Pathologist. You will receive simple but effective recommendations and strategies for you and your baby.

What to expect

1. Schedule an appointment

Book an appointment online or with our admin team. Prior to your appointment be sure to complete the online intake form.

2. Bring relevant items to your appointment

You will be asked to bring foods, bottles or cups, growth history, and any other relevant assessments.

3. Assessment
We will ask questions about medical history, development, growth, feeding history, food and nutrition intake.

4. Feeding Observation
We will observe and engage with your child while eating and drinking. This allows for an assessment of their oral motor skills, positioning, sensory preferences, and feeding temperament.

5. Feedback & Recommendations
We will share feedback on your child’s feeding skills and other factors contributing to their feeding challenges and provide recommendations.

6. Suggested Follow-Up
If needed, recommendations for treatments will be made, which can include at-home activities, therapy sessions, or other feeding development resources.

We will provide recommendations to get started on introducing solids, which may include: assessing readiness, different approaches (baby-led weaning, purees, combined), prevention of allergies, mealtime schedule, how much and how often to offer, texture and size of food, and responsive feeding.

4. Suggested Follow-Up
We recommend booking a follow-up appointment 3-6 weeks after the first appointment so that we can review your child’s progress and discuss the next steps including: advancing textures, when to increase the number of meals, and how to wean breastmilk or formula.
